Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a skilled and innovative littoral oceanographer to provide direct support to Navy missions in nearshore areas around the world from San Diego, CA. This support requires the setup and operation of the DELFT3D nearshore ocean model, analysis of model output, and fusion with other data sources to construct and brief mission support products. The role also involves training of Navy operators and METOC personnel in littoral oceanography forecasting. The successful candidate will be based in San Diego, but will have to opportunity to travel to Stennis Space Center, MS annually for coordination with Navy modelers and collaborate to expand skillset.  There will also be opportunities to travel to participate on site in exercises one to three times per year.

 

What you will do…  

  • Setup and operation of DELFT3D model locations and model analysis products for planning, exercises, and operations based on requests for service from operational Navy customers who are typically forward deployed. This includes acquiring high-resolution imagery and bathymetry, building grid with required resolution and implementing the model domain, providing model setup parameters including tidal, wind, and wave forcing, and providing model output in the required format.
  • Evaluation and testing of model performance through comparison of nowcasts and forecasts with buoy data, unmanned underwater vehicles, acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCP), and other observations.
  • Interviewing mission personnel to gather anecdotal observations and verification.
  • Coordinating modeling requirements through direct communication with operational personnel and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) modeling personnel.
  • Coordinating product specifications and improvements.
  • Providing direct on-site exercise support.
  • Provide expertise and documentation for the training of military littoral forecasters.
  • Properly handling classified materials.
Qualifications
  • 0 years with BS/BA; 4 years no degree
  • Clearance:  Ability to obtain a Top Secret/SCI
  • Science background in one of the following from areas: statistics, applied mathematics, oceanography, oceanographic models, physical sciences, geo-physical processes modeling, atmospheric models, meteorology, remote sensors, or computation fluid dynamic modeling.
  • Base knowledge and experience in some field of fluid dynamics
  • Desired Experiences:  

    • DELFT3D modeling experience.
    • Knowledge of expeditionary and Special Operations Forces mission functions.

Target Salary Range

$66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
