Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking Summer 2024 Cyber Research Interns in support of Peraton Labs in Silver Spring, MD who will work on applied research projects in one or more key areas related to cyber security and systems research.

 

Peraton Labs delivers innovative solutions and revolutionary new capabilities to solve the most difficult and complex challenges for government agencies, utilities, and commercial customers. With a distinguished heritage tracing back to Bell Labs, Bellcore, DHPC, and Telcordia, we are a self-sustaining research center within Peraton that provides applied research and engineering to enable government agencies, utilities and commercial enterprises to fully exploit the future of communications, analytics and cyber security. Peraton Labs’ cybersecurity research protects mission-critical systems and national cyber infrastructure through a broad range of initiatives in computer network defense, cyber operations, secure-by-design techniques, and experimentation platforms.

 

Responsibilities:

Qualified applicants must be able to perform applied research and development in one or more key areas of interest:

  • Full-spectrum cyber operations, offensive and defensive cyber operations.
  • Software reverse engineering, vulnerability research, and exploit development.
  • Malware analysis.
  • Network protocol development, analysis, and reverse engineering.
  • Host and network-based forensic analysis
  • Machine learning methods as applied to cyber security problems.
  • Program analysis (including vulnerability detection and/or remediation).
  • AI planning and reasoning as applied to cyber security problems.
  • Red-team experience in cyber exercises.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires High School diploma and some advanced level training.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be enrolled at an accredited university pursuing a BS/BA degree or MS/MA degree majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Information Science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience building systems in Python or C/C++; additional languages (Java, Rust, Go, etc) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Linux and Windows platforms.
  • Familiarity with the principles and technologies used in modern TCP/IP networks.
  • Ability to integrate, build, and test high-quality technical solutions.
  • Effective communication and writing skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing in and administering Linux.
  • A passion to learn something new every day and to stay up-to-date with developments in your field.
  • Adept at independent problem-solving and comfortable with a general approach of taking initiative to find and develop solutions.
  • Ability and desire to quickly acquire knowledge of new subject matter areas.
  • Working knowledge of modern computer networking technologies.
  • Familiarity with modern agile development practices (Scrum and similar).
  • Familiarity with container and orchestration solutions, including Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Terraform .
  • Experience with networking protocols.
  • Experience with configuring network appliances.
  • Ability to grasp the “big picture” and see beyond specific problems.
  • Program analysis, including program understanding, vulnerability identification, and remediation.
