Responsibilities

We are hiring a Boat Coxswain in San Diego, CA. 

 

What you will do:

  • As a Boat Coxswain, you will integrate into a small team charged with operations and maintenance of systems in support of US Navy mine countermeasures (MCM) missions in the San Diego harbor and off the coast of Southern California.
  • This will include support to other government customers and Navy units as a qualified boat coxswain outside MK18 systems, including deployments to support 5th fleet in Bahrain, 7th fleet Guam, and 6th fleet Spain.

 

This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Perform duties as a boat coxswain for the 11 Meter RHIB, 38’ North River outboard, 27’ Whaler and Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC).
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of the vessel(s) diesel engine, water jet propulsion unit, outboard engines, and boat mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems to determine route cause of issue and recommend a corrective action and conduct repairs as needed.
  • Perform pre and post inspections of vessels and fill out daily reports and logs.
  • Launch and recovery of the vessels.
  • Navigation and communications aboard the craft.
  • Overall safe operations of the vessels.
  • Testing and maintenance to ensure equipment is in operating condition.
  • General maintenance and troubleshooting of Multiquip and Honda generators.
  • When deployed in support of the fleet you will be responsible for MSE (Mission Support Equipment) electrical set-up and troubleshooting.
  • If parts are needed, you will be responsible for reporting equipment issues through the Chain of Command.
  • Cross-training with On-the-Job Training (OJT) and attending MK18 Family of Systems (FoS) Operations and Maintenance (O&M) courses to operate Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs).
Qualifications

BA/BS or 4 years of applicable experience in lieu of degree. 

 

What you'll need:

  • Shall have a minimum of two years’ demonstrated experience holding a boat coxswain or captain qualification from a military or civilian source.
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET security clearance.
  • Shall have and provide a current small boat coxswain qualification, meeting the minimum requirements set forth in NAVEDTRA 43606.
  • Within 45 days of hire personnel filing this role must demonstrate their proficiency in the presence of a qualified NIWC Pacific coxswain.
  • Shall become qualified in operating MK 18 system equipment, including Zodiac 11M twin jet drive RHIB, 38’ North River outboard RHIB, 27’ outboard Boston Whaler and F580/470 Combat
  • Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC) within 45 days of task award. A performance qualifications standards process, administered by NIWC PAC personnel, shall be completed within 45 days of hire.
  • Shall have a minimum of one year of experience completing maintenance logs on all required equipment and producing weekly reports on condition of equipment (pre-light /post light, engine hours, maintenance completed, supplies needed).
  • Shall have a minimum of one year conducting routine operational and preventive maintenance (oils, fluids, filters changed) and performing basic troubleshooting and maintenance, to include replacing parts.
  • Shall complete applicable OEM or vendor-provided training for appropriate diesel and gas engine plus drive system (i.e., Cummins or Yanmar Diesel engines, Yamaha gas Outboards and Hamilton Jet Drive) within 6 months of hire.
  • Shall complete all prerequisites for, and successfully maintain a Government Class “C” Driver License, Cat 3 crane certification, 20k and below forklift operator’s license. Requirements shall be completed within 60 days of hire.
  • Periodic travel CONUS to support UUV testing and evaluation at various military bases, government facilities, or to conduct shipboard operations.
  • Requirement to handle man-portable UUV’s and equipment; must meet the MIL-STD for weight carrying limits.

Target Salary Range

$51,000 - $82,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
