Responsibilities
Peraton is seeking a journey level propulsion drive and mechanical engineer to provide full time support for our NAVAIR customer in Lexington Park/Patuxent River, MD.
What you will do:
The candidate must be knowledgeable in the areas of gear and bearing technology development, manufacturing processes, and applications in the Aerospace sector. The candidate will provide technical oversight, guidance, and recommendations to the government team members and coordinate with Integrated Program Team leadership. They will represent Naval Air Warfare Center – Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) to other Government Agencies, Academia, and the private sector. The candidate will have direct influence on current and future technical policies and standards for the rotary wing, tilt-rotor or fixed wing platform that they will support. This position provides technical consistency for the entire lifecycle, from concept development and design through sustainment. Experience with design, manufacturing and operation of geared transmission systems is required.
Responsibilities and Interfaces
The Drive and Mechanical Systems Engineer will:
- Provide authoritative input and advice on all drive and mechanical systems engineering and technical issues and ensuring engineering requirements are met for platform supported.
- Formulates engineering design concepts and performance requirements which provide the basis for overall technical and engineering planning for the platform supported.
- Develops the technical approach, cost estimates, manpower/facilities requirements, and milestones related to program objectives and ensures all project objectives are adequately considered including R&D, design, development, implementation, test, validation, and transition.
- Maintains knowledge of current and future capabilities, problems and demands upon the fielded system(s) and provides overall technical planning for development, engineering, and evaluation of drive and mechanical systems capabilities.
- Integrates Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) cost estimates with program plans (schedules, development requirements), test and evaluation requirements, projected problems, etc.,) into a total acquisition POM and budget.
- Serves as technical liaison with Navy in-service engineers, OEM engineers and component and performance specialists to provide engineering support and technical effort supervision and management.
- Develops engineering portions of Procurement Requests, Requests for Proposal, Requests for Quotations, etc. Specifies criteria for evaluation of engineering portions of contractor proposals and directs the systems engineering portion of evaluations during the source selection process.
- Evaluates technological developments and their applicability to the platform being supported.
- Ensures all technical and engineering requirements of the program are met including quality assurance, reliability, maintainability, system compatibility, safety engineering, etc.
- Reviews and evaluates Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) for accuracy and feasibility and advises as to the technical aspects. Provides technical direction and ensures proper testing of all approved ECP engineering changes.
- Maintains continuous contact with research and development personnel in order to be informed on all new engineering and scientific developments which might be applied to current capabilities.
- Participates in technical workshops, symposia, and other scientific gatherings for the purpose of exchanging scientific and technical information relevant to gear and bearing materials and processes.
- Establishes and maintains contacts with engineering personnel and high-level officials throughout the fleet and NAVAIR, at other SYSCOMs and military departments; at higher Navy levels; and at contractor’s plants and offices in order to exchange information, develop or interpret requirements enforce adherence to policies and specifications, and negotiate approval of suggestions and requests.
Qualifications
What you will need:
- Minimum BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- Minimum 5+ years-experience in developing, analyzing, qualifying/certifying drive and mechanical systems components
- Aerospace gear materials and processing (understand)
- Aerospace bearing materials and processing (understand)
- Knowledge of post processing techniques for improved part quality (understand)
- Knowledge of Non-destructive Inspection/Evaluation (NDI/NDE) methods (understand)
- Must be able to obtain a us DoD security clearance
- Occasional travel may be required
- Telework options will be considered based on position and Command needs.
Desired (But not required):
- Navy and/or DoD Aviation Product Experience, specifically rotary wing or tilt-rotor drive systems.
- Experience with transmission design, test and operation
- Must be energetic, creative and take initiative; able to work well independently or as part of a team
- Must have an ability to work well with others, develop and justify a technical position, present results to a team and communicate effectively with a customer
- Evidence of abilities in teaming/soft skills/communication/tech writing/project management
Target Salary Range
$86,000 - $138,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
